American Highway Code US Route 61 History
. U.S. Route 61 is the authorized designation for a United States highway that runs about 1,400 miles (2,300 km) all the way from New Orleans, Louisiana, towards the city of Wyoming, Minnesota; it normally follows the route of the Mississippi River.
. As of 2004, the highway's northern terminus in Wyoming as well as Minnesota will be at an intersection with Interstate 35. Earlier to 1991, the highway has extended towards all the way through Duluth, Minnesota to the United States-Canada border near Grand Portage, Minnesota.
. Its southern terminus in New Orleans is at an intersection with U.S. Route 90, in front of the Orleans Parish Criminal Court.
. The route was a significant north-south connection in the days just before the interstate highway system. Most of the southerners had traveled north along Highway 61 to go to St. Louis, Missouri as well as St. Paul, Minnesota. This highway is also used in the title of Duluth-native Bob Dylan's song (and album) "Highway 61 Revisited."
