. U.S. Route 83 is considered as one of the longest north-south U.S. Highways in the United States with 1,885 miles (3,034 km). Barely four other longer routes of north-south routes are: U.S. 1, U.S. 41, U.S. 59 and U.S. 87.
. The highway's northern terminus is at north of Westhope, North Dakota, at the Canadian border, where it continues as Manitoba Highway 83. The southern terminus is located in Brownsville, Texas, at the Veteran's International Bridge on the Mexican border; it links with Mexican Federal Highway 180.
. In spite of its length it has relatively a small amount of concurrencies with some Interstate Highways, and all those segments are short. In no place has it been decommissioned as a route.
