    Auto Salvage

Auto salvage is the practice of removing and reusing automotive parts from inoperable vehicles, then carefully disposing of the portions of the car that cannot be salvaged. This is used in auto salvage yards, also called auto recyclers. Auto salvage prevents the waste of functional parts and materials, and promotes environmental conservation by reusing vehicle components instead of disposing of them in a landfill.

Automobile manufacturing is the leading industry in the world. As such, it is also the one to produce the most waste. This waste places a large burden on landfills and, by extension, the environment. The auto salvage industry attempts to mitigate this problem by reusing any parts of the car that are still useful. As much as 76% of an average car's parts can be salvaged -- other than any other mass-produced complex item.

Environmentally sound auto salvage normally has three phases. The initial stage, called pre-treatment, consists of preparing the vehicle for disassembly. This involves draining it of all fluids, such as oil, coolant, and fuel, to avoid them from leaking out while the vehicle is on the salvage yard and seeping into the groundwater. The gas tank, battery, and tires are also detached.

The fluids are reused in another vehicle, sold, or transported from the auto salvage yard to a recycling ability. The battery is also re-sold or recycled. Gas tanks, once drained, can be used as scrap metal. Tires can be reused in a variety of ways -- they can be re-treaded, used as ground rubber, or burned for energy at certified facilities.

    Auto Transport Inspection

An auto inspection is generally required by law to ensure that the vehicles on the road are safe for people and for the environment. Owners are necessary to take their cars to a shop that specializes in or is licensed to perform an auto inspection. Safety inspections check a number of the car's systems, such as brake operation and condition of gears, to be sure that the car does not pose a threat to the driver or anyone else on the road. Clean air inspections test the chemical content of the exhaust to make sure that the car's emissions control system is working properly. If a car fails an auto inspection for any reason, the owner will be necessary to have the car repaired so that it complies with the inspection's standards.

An auto inspection is also regularly performed prior to purchasing a car. This type of auto inspection ensures that a car will be a good investment for the buyer, and is generally performed by a mechanic that the buyer trusts. These auto inspections normally follow a list of points, such as braking system, cooling system, and so on; this is to ensure that each car gets the same thorough inspection.

Transport Airframes Contribute to Medical Evacuation Mission

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan, July 17, 2008 - Though the notion of transporting patients to medical treatment by air usually evokes images of helicopters, transport aircraft such as the C-130 Hercules, KC-135 Stratotanker and C-17 Globemaster III allow medical personnel to care for larger numbers of patients over longer distances, at higher altitudes, with a greater ability to care for the seriously injured.

The 455th Expeditionary Aeromedical Evacuation Flight here cares for and transports patients from all over Afghanistan to Bagram Airfield and run missions taking patients out of the combat theater to Ramstein Air Base in Germany.

The crews at the 455th EAEF are mandated to be airborne within three hours of receiving request for aeromedical evacuation, Air Force Tech. Sgt. Alexandria Young, a duty controller for the unit, said. This involves checking and loading 800 pounds of emergency equipment and converting the cargo hold of a C-130 or C-17 into a flying hospital.

Despite the daunting time frame, Young said, she has seen this complex task performed in as little as 45 minutes.

"It is always a team effort, working with the air terminal operations center, fuels shop, pilots and loadmasters," Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Adam Marks, a 455th EAEF member, said.

Air Force Lt. Col. Michael Gainer, 455th EAEF commander, said one of the big strengths of the aeromedical evacuation mission is to be able to cater to patients needing critical-care support.

"Depending on patient acuity," he said, “the standard crew of nurses and EMT trained aeromedical technicians can be augmented with a critical-care air-transport team consisting of a critical-care doctor, a critical-care nurse and a respiratory therapist. This allows patients to be moved, when required, literally direct from the operating room to the aircraft."

With the combination of Army helicopters flying wounded servicemembers from the battlefield to medical care and the Air Force's aeromedical evacuation system picking up the process from there, he said, injured and wounded servicemembers have rapid access to the level of care they need.

Consultation underway on integrated ticketing strategy

Transport Scotland has unveiled plans to introduce cash-less integrated tickets which can be used on buses, trains and ferries throughout Scotland. Smartcard technology is being developed which will allow users to access different travel services, ensuring Scotland has one of the most sophisticated travel systems in Europe in place well in advance of the Commonwealth Games coming here in 2014. The Integrated Ticketing Strategy for Scotland is currently being considered by transport operators, local authorities, Regional Transport Partnerships and transport user groups. Consultation is due to be completed later this month.

Stewart Stevenson, Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Climate Change said:

"The eyes of the world will be on Scotland in 2014 and it is vital we have a sophisticated, effective ticketing system in place which provides genuine ease of access across our transport networks.

“We have therefore looked at existing smartcard-based ticketing systems used by other countries who have hosted events of the magnitude of the Commonwealth Games in order to develop something which is as good as anything seen anywhere in the world.

"Ensuring the millions of visitors coming to our country in 2014 experience a first class level of service is absolutely vital, but the effects of this policy will be felt well beyond the Commonwealth Games.

"This new ticketing system has the potential to change the way we all go about our daily business, making it easier to travel across different modes of transport through seamless integration between our trains, buses and ferries.

"Smartcard pilot schemes are already being developed in locations such as Orkney, Dundee and South Lanarkshire.

"Bus and ferry operators across Scotland are also being provided with smartcard-enabled ticketing equipment.

"We eagerly await the results of this consultation on the draft proposals and the feedback we receive will inform the new Strategy, which will provide the blueprint for how we implement a smartcard based integrated ticketing system across Scotland."

Benefits of an integrated ticketing system are expected to include ease of use for users, revenue protection for operators, market growth, leading to better services and simplification for visitors.

Following the consultation exercise, the Strategy is set to be formally launched later this year.

    Florida Current Transport

The Florida Current is a strong oceanic current flowing northward along the eastern coast of Florida carrying warm tropical waters that eventually feed the Gulf Stream. The Florida Current represents both the western boundary current for the subtropical wind-driven gyre as well as a return pathway for the Thermohaline Overturning Cell, which consists of a slow circulation redistributing the waters of the world ocean based on sinking at the high latitudes and upwelling elsewhere. The Thermohaline Overturning Cell has been documented to have strong impacts on the global climate, and as such variations in the Florida Current, which returns surface waters to the northern North Atlantic, represent an important climate signal to be monitored. Since 1982, NOAA has recognized the importance of long-term monitoring of the Florida Current and it has funded a project to monitor the transport variations of the current using a submarine cable and snapshot estimates made by shipboard instruments.
